Gusty winds didn’t stop 57 professional BBQ teams from cooking up a storm at our 6th Annual Barn Burner BBQ October 14 & 15. Most competitors were from Illinois and Wisconsin, but one team, Skin and Bones, made the trek all the way from Florida to cook and sell their BBQ delights. The wind made setting up tents and other supplies difficult, but the teams persevered.
On Friday Night, five teams – Husky Hog, Vicious and Delicious, Hawgwash BBQ, Rack Masters BBQ, and Risky Brisket – cooked up signature chilies to enter into Chili Challenge Cook-Off. Other teams and spectators purchases tasting spoons and sampled each chili. The People’s Choice award went to Vicious and Delicious, which was extra special because chef Kati was celebrating her birthday! Late into Friday night, smoke could be seen rising off of grills and smokers. Many teams had strict cooking schedules that they adhered to, waking up at all hours to rotate, season, and taste.
Saturday morning, teams woke bright and early to prepare for the day ahead. BBQ entry turn-in started at noon, so everything had to be ready and plated for judging before then. Our Neighborhood Picnic performed fantastic music as the teams lined up for turn-in. Once all the entries were received, the judging could begin. With 57 teams, it took quite a while, but the KCBS judges didn’t rush, making sure that each team got equal time and attention. Music and good food helped teams relax as they anxiously awaited the results. A lot of spectators came to watch the teams and enjoy a day of food and music, as well – all of our businesses were bustling! Finally, after much anticipation and waiting in the chilly winds, the awards ceremony began. The grand champion was Brew-B-Q, from Round Lake, Illinois!
Congratulations to all of the BBQ teams who competed this year! Thanks to Our Neighborhood Picnic for the great music, and thank you to all the people who came out and joined us at this event!
